I. Background

At the November 2005 Trilateral Pre- conference, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) presented a search sharing proposal (Triway) that would leverage the search- ing expertise of each of the Trilateral Offices (European Patent Office (EPO), Japan Patent Office (JPO) and USPTO) for the benefit of both applicants and the Offices.

Notice from the European Patent Office concerning non-attendance at oral proceedings before the examining division

The increasing number of patent appli- cations involves an increasing number of oral proceedings in examination. The purpose of oral proceedings is to settle as far as possible all outstanding questions relevant to the decision. Most of the oral proceedings take place at the request of the applicants. However, recently the number of oral proceedings where applicants do not attend has increased considerably.

I. Background

The European Patent Office (EPO) and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) announced on 28 April 2008 that they intended to launch a new trial co-operation initiative called the Patent Prosecution Highway in September 2008.

The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia accedes to the European Patent Convention

1. Accession to the EPC

On 28 October 2008, the Government of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (MK) deposited its instru- ment of accession to the European Patent Convention (EPC).

The EPC will accordingly enter into force for the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on 1 January 2009.

The European Patent Organisation will thus comprise the following 35 member states as from 1 January 2009:
